Lusciously curved furniture by Tortie Hoare

UK furniture designer Tortie Hoare creates her pieces with the clear and focused motivation that they be ergonomic, durable and aesthetically pleasing. With environmental consciousness also playing a big consideration, she has invested a lot of time in developing ways to create her furniture through methods other than relying on plastic resin.

Through this belief Tortie Hoare has come across the method of boiling leather to create smooth and gentle 3D shapes. I love the way she describes this process in her own words, "I have tried to combine old methods and new ways of thinking to create contemporary furniture...". The beautifully simple  forms of her pieces are derived by shaping and taming the boiled leather. I love the phrase 'taming the leather'... a phrase, again, borrowed from the artist's own eloquent description of her work.

What particularly attracts me to this furniture is the simplicity of the soft curves and the utter smoothness of the leather. The beautiful Butterfly chair, my favourite, is so charming and elegant with it's low, wide form, defined by two clearly different surface treatments, that come together pristinely. I have the impression that if I touch the leather my finger will disappear into a delicious pool of chocolate fondu.
